3/13/2008 - Armstrong`s Jay Barr Raises $4,330 for Make-A-Wish Charity

Horns blared nonstop as miles of colorful big rigs rolled slowly down Route 222 on Sunday, May 11, in the 19th annual Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Mother’s Day Convoy.

Among the drivers was Lancaster Plant’s Jay Barr, whose Armstrong truck joined 380 others in what is called the world’s largest moving convoy. Jay raised $4,330 for the charity, with nearly $3,600 donated by Armstrong employees and the Armstrong Foundation.

Thousands of spectators lined the 22-mile route to wave and cheer on the trucks and their special passengers – children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. They watched from pickup trucks, lawn chairs and highway overpasses. Even members of Lancaster County’s Amish and Mennonite farming communities gathered on grassy hillsides to see the unusual procession.

The money raised through the campaign is used to enrich the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions in Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. Since the convoy started in 1986, nearly 1,000 children in the Susquehanna Valley have been granted wishes.

For 5-year-old Mary Torres of Strasburg, Pennsylvania, this was her first big rig ride. As Jay’s co-pilot, she manned the air horn and waved to the crowds.
